May begins with Jupiter, Saturn and Pluto all retrograde.
Note: All the dates below are for Australian Eastern Time.
A few words about the Australian Election
The election falls on May 18, the day before the Full Moon in Scorpio. Uranus is squaring the MC/IC axis in Australia’s Federation chart so there is something unpredictable or disruptive about the whole process. The transit is exact on April 27 and returns later in the year, becoming exact again on December 25 and January 28.
This could play out in a number of ways: firstly as a change of government; secondly it could be interpreted as an unexpected event – a coalition win; thirdly it could suggest a result that is in some way destabilizing which could suggest neither party can form a majority on its own.
There may also be some destabilizing event that has an impact on the election and on Australia’s public image over the rest of the year. Whatever happens at around this election will create reverberations that echo through the rest of this year and could lead to more change /instability / disruption over the Christmas New Year period.
Adding to the confusion for astrologers is the fact that we do not know the birth times for either Scott Morrison or Bill Shorten and both men are having similar powerful transits to their Sun’s. Both men are Taureans - they are born one year and one day apart - and have their Sun conjunct Australia’s Moon, so one thing is clear: Australia’s next Prime Minister looks like being a Taurean.
The May New Moon
The New Moon on May 5 falls at close to 14 degrees of Taurus, putting the spotlight on the Taurean part of all of us, highlighting values, security and our relationship with the physical, material and financial realms. This is a powerful time to reflect on our values and what constitutes our security.
This New Moon forms no stressful aspects and contains two supportive aspects; a trine to Saturn and a sextile to Neptune. These two planets are also sextile each other, suggesting an easier flow between pragmatism, duty and responsibility [Saturn] and imagination, creativity, intuition and feeling [Neptune].

The Full Moon of May 19 falls at close to 28 degrees of Scorpio and marks the annual Festival of the Buddha, known as WESAK. The full moon is squared by the Black Moon Lilith adding the energy of the Great Goddess to this lunation. All these factors make THIS A VERY POTENT FULL MOON FOR REALIZING WHAT HOLDS US BACK FROM THE BEING THE PERSON WE WISH TO BE.
Wesak honors both the physical birth of the Buddha and his spiritual birth or enlightenment; it is the time when the Buddha returns to remind us of the possibility of awakening and enlightenment.
The Wesak festival invites us to refocus on our spiritual lives and look at what needs to be released or let go, so we can become more compassionate and awakened. The days either side of Wesak are potent times for inner work, reflection, meditation and letting go.
As Wesak is also the Full Moon in Scorpio, this is a natural time for us to explore what needs to be let go. Scorpio also highlights issues around power, control, safety and trust. Scorpio is a passionate and intensely emotional sign that can fear the depth of feeling that it experiences and may choose to bury or repress these feelings due to the discomfort they arouse. Scorpio’s reputation for control is a fear based reaction of ‘holding on’ while the challenge is to ‘let go’ control and learn to trust in the Self and allow the free flowing of feeling.
Scorpio always challenges us to let go fear, by moving closer towards it, rather than running away, and thereby allowing ourselves to experience deeper intimacy with ourselves and others. This is a powerful time for deep sharing and strengthening of intimate connections of all kinds.
The opposition with the Sun in Taurus highlights the Scorpio / Taurus polarity: the urge to build and create as opposed to the urge to destroy, let go and transform. It is also about the urge to share and risk vulnerability [Scorpio] versus the urge to hold onto what is ours. All these patterns may come up for review under this lunation.
The Full Moon forms a t-square with Black Moon Lilith, adding another layer of intensity to this lunation and reinforcing the Wesak /Scorpio challenges. The Black Moon works with the Law of Cycles and asks us to let go what has completed its purpose so a new cycle can begin. The Black Moon challenges us to sacrifice [make sacred] old identities [Sun], thought processes and words [Mercury] as well as emotional attachments [Moon] that no longer serve us and offer them up for transformation. If we can make the sacrifices, there is space for the sacred to enter in the form of Her blessing of renewed fertility as cycles ending always lead to new cycles beginning.
